Dan Deevy runs Gays In Space, an LGBT themed “charity” that hosted the 2023 Diversity & Inclusion Con in Philadelphia (D&I Con). Due to overspending the event lost over $25,000 leaving the AV vendor unpaid for $10,000 and a supporter unpaid for $15,000.
In 2023 Gays in Space promised to give 4-10 scholarships for LGBT kids to attend Space Camp. They never gave those scholarships and instead the money went to pay for D&I Con 2023 which included Dan’s celebrity wedding to Rich Hart, officiated by Denise Crosby.
In 2024 a second D&I Con was hosted and Gays In Space again promised to give scholarships to LGBT youth to go to Space Camp. Gays In Space gave zero scholarships and Dan announced the termination all together of their scholarship program.
D&I Con 2025 was canceled due to abysmal ticket sales. The California DOJ filed notice with their intent to revoke Deevy’s non-profit status due to unfiled financial disclosures. 17 Board Members had resigned in protest in 2024 leaving Deevy with few financial lifelines. Frustrated attendees now scramble to collect refunds and worry they’ll never get their money back.
All information here is true to our best knowledge based on public documents. Some details are likely incorrect. If you have questions, tips or wish to suggest corrections please email lies@gaysinspace.org.
Dan Deevy has not posted about outstanding D&I Con refunds since May 17 (67 days ago) but Deevy has come out of hiding for another round of late night drunken phone calls, voicemails and texts. This time targeting former Gays In Space volunteer Matthew Egan. Deevy left a two minute voicemail claiming that a girl had taken her own life because she “believed you that the family they found with us was a lie” though Deevy does not name a victim.
The voicemail is a mess, but Deevy eventually said “they’re not here anymore” and that “there were all sorts of people that suffered”. The voicemail began with a “this has gone on far enough” tone, but shifted dramatically as Deevy migrated to text, going on the attack, chiding “Do you not see what you’ve done???? Answer your fucking phone.” Egan ignored the calls and texts.
Keeping with his recent “catch me outside” tone Deevy added, “You are goddamn pathetic. I will come there to you and confront you for an actual response to what you are responsible for.” and ending with “For fucks sakes man, your nonsense lies KILLED a person!!!! How fucking Dare you??????”
Deevy does not go into detail on which lies he imagines lead to this outcome, but Gays In Space is in the process of losing their non-profit status via the California Attorney General and people are still waiting for their 2025 D&I Con refunds. On top of these recent matters, the A/V vendor from 2023 D&I Con is still owed over $10,000 and a $15,000 personal loan remains unpaid by Deevy.
We do not know if an actual person has taken their life, or if this person was even a member of the Gays In Space community. It would not be a surprise to see Dan Deevy using a tragedy like this as a prop against those who seek to see him held accountable for the harm he has done.
We will update this website with more information as we collect it and if you have information on the incident Deevy is eluding to please contact our tip line lies@gaysinspace.org.
Gays In Space’s legal woes continue as DonorBox, the charity donor platform that Deevy uses to collect donations via the Gays In Space website, has taken their donation page down.
This action was in response to Gays In Space’s ongoing delinquency with the California Attorney General that has lead to this order intending to terminate their non-profit status. This follows previous action taken by Charity Navigator where they warn users not to donate because of Deevy’s delinquent non-profit status. To protect donors, California’s AB-488 law requires donor portals to remove non-profits that are out of compliance or delinquent.
Following this action if you go to the Donate button on the Gays In Space website, it simply gives you this error that the donation page can no longer be found.
A new communication with Dan Deevy was forwarded to our lies@gaysinspace.org email tip line. In this email Dan Deevy admits to a ticket holder that there just isn’t any money.
Deevy said, “if I had the money to refund everyone immediately of course I would. Do you think I’d be putting myself through this hell by just sitting on money and refusing to refund it? We lost our funding. We’re not getting any refunds from our up front costs. If I had the money to refund everyone right away, we would never have had to cancel.”
Deevy’s email concludes, “That’s why I’m sending out refunds as new funding comes in. If you’ll be patient and try to understand the situation you will get all of your money back. It will just take some time.” but “I will pay you soon” is a promise Deevy has broken before.
This email promise reminds me heavily of the exchange regarding the unpaid A/V services for Dan Deevy and Rich Hart’s wedding in 2023 that was paid for using charity funds. Deevy still owes over $10,000 to the A/V vendor and made similar promises to them in July of 2023, promising “Rich and I have decided to liquidate his entire retirement fund to pay the remaining balance for the Marriott so we can begin selling tickets for next year at which point we’ll be able to pay you guys.” Here we are three years later and that A/V vendor was still never paid.
Deevy is always looking ahead to the next scheme, in July of 2023 it was selling tickets to meet Kate Mulgrew that was going to save his financial situation, in 2025 he was sure that having Jeri Ryan as a guest would bail him out of financial challenges. He is always banking on next years sales to try to save face for last year’s failures and that is no way to run a business or a charity. Like a desperate gambler, fantasizing about that one big score that will solve every problem.
This is an important point. We respect the mission of Gays In Space as they state it, and we agree that a small number of people had a good time at D&I Con, but you can’t carry on year after year owing people tens of thousands of dollars. Those handful of people who benefit are not worth the cost of so many people Dan Deevy has wronged, and continues to wrong, and the lies he tells to attack anyone that tries to hold him accountable.
“Once you have their money, you never give it back.”

Unable to give refunds, Dan Deevy sent a long email to ticket holders from the failed 2025 D&I Con with a laundry list of excuses. In the email Deevy lists other LGBTQIA+ events that have struggled this year due to Trump and issues with the economy. The problem is Deevy compares Gays In Space with massive organizations like The Kennedy Center or New York Pride. Deevy last filed his federal 990 as a non-profit in 2022 and they did not even make the minimum $50,000 required to file a full 990, instead filing the 990-N ‘e-postcard’ used by very small nonprofits. The Kennedy Center that Dan Deevy compares himself to in this email, has an annual operating budget of $268 Million.
Just for reference that makes Gays In Space 5,360 times smaller than the Kennedy Center, but he thinks people are dumb enough to believe his tiny D&I Con and the Kennedy Center are experiencing similar challenges. Instead he’s piggybacking onto the real struggles of better organizations and claiming to be a victim of the same circumstances to dodge the blame for his incompetence.
Sorry Dan, D&I Con had poor attendance in 2023 and ended in debt, D&I Con had poor attendance in 2024 and ended in debt, and the ticket sales were so bad in 2025 the entire event collapsed financially. You literally admit this during the Zoom meeting you hosted to explain to people why you couldn’t give refunds yet for 2025.
Concerned attendees forwarded Deevy’s email to our lies@gaysinspace.org tip line and one replied to Deevy chastising Gays In Space for “being overly verbose” instead of “just shutting up and giving everybody their refunds and moving on”. Deevy replied, “Did you just tell me to shut up and imply that those 300+ events are an irrelevant nuisance to hear about?”
This “do you know who I am” whiny outburst from Deevy brings up a key lie he has been repeating lately ad nauseam: that he has hosted 300+ events as the Director of Gays In Space so we should cut him some slack that D&I Con failed and he can’t refund people. The problem is some of the 300+ events he’s talking about is GiS having a booth at other conventions, or Deevy piggybacking onto an existing event at a bar or party and claiming it as his own. The only thing he organized anywhere near the scale of D&I Con 2025 was D&I Con 2023 and 2024 – neither exceeding 300 attendees.
He’s comparing hosting small Trek guests on Zoom calls and bar trivia nights to hosting a con. His convention tally isn’t 300+, it’s 2 because #3 never happened. Yes, his lies are that thin.
D&I Con failed because they had abysmal ticket sales, Deevy admitted this on video when he said “Our ticket sales this year were so much less than the first two years.” That’s why he didn’t post between April 8th and April 20th, he knew it was falling apart but he kept that to himself while D&I Con ticket holders bought flights and booked hotel rooms in downtown Philly. Dan Deevy knew.
He was hoping last minute sponsorships and donations would bail him out, but people don’t donate to non-profits who are three years behind on their tax filings, that had 17 board members resign on the same day after Deevy’s 2024 D&I Con disaster, and that owe tens of thousands of dollars to vendors (and now attendees) that they stiffed. Every year he just burns somebody new, as his event shrinks.
D&I Con 2025 failed because of Dan Deevy, but he can’t accept this, so he’s desperately scraping and screaming for any lifeline to blame besides himself, even admitting that he is a one man operation now because everyone else left. You might be the RFK Jr type Kennedy Dan, but you’re certainly not the Kennedy Center kind, sorry. 27 days left before the California DOJ shuts you down, again.
Gays In Space is not issuing refunds, but Dan Deevy is issuing threats!
Deevy wants to catch us outside! After not posting for 26 days Dan Deevy came out of hiding yet again to be met with multiple posts about the California Department of Justice’s intent to revoke Gays In Space’s non-profit status for the second time. On an updated Gaaays In Spaace Facebook cover image post, a user quipped: “Resisting giving refunds?” and “You just got your 501 revoked AGAIN?”
Deevy went ballistic, stating “So which coward are you hiding behind yet another fake profile?” People comment on Deevy’s post using fake profiles because he bans anyone from commenting that even remotely disagrees with him or calls him out for all of the people he owes tens of thousands of dollars to. An interesting behavior for a non-profit that is meant to serve the public good.
Deevy continued, “Next time you wanna talk sh*t, come say it to my face. I will relish the opportunity to be in the same room with you and see what happens.” Deevy added, “It’s a little something called consequences douche bag and I am more than happy to introduce you to them.”
Deevy may not have studied nonprofit compliance, but he passed Advanced Bat’leth with honors. His next away mission? To boldly throw hands where no refund has gone before!
The California Attorney General’s Office (because they don’t have enough going on) has issued Dan Deevy and Gaaays In Spaaace a letter declaring their intent to revoke Gaaays In Spaaace’s non-profit status in 30 days because they have not filed their required 990 financial documents that every non-profit must file. This will be the second time Gays In Space’s charity status has been revoked.
The letter states: “If the organization has not cured its delinquency with our office, or submitted a signed Appeal and Request for Hearing* within 30 days, your registration will be suspended or revoked, and you will no longer be permitted to conduct business in the State of California.”
Of special note, the document also states: “Charitable assets are restricted to use for charitable purposes and cannot be used to pay avoidable late fees and penalties. Avoidable late fees and penalties generally constitute waste of charitable assets and damage to the charity. A director that has committed a breach of fiduciary duty or breach of trust by allowing avoidable penalties and late fees may be held liable for any damages to the charity.”
These fines and penalties are assessed to the Board of Directors personally and they may not use charity funds (not that there are any currently) to pay these fines. So Dan Deevy, his husband Rich Hart, and Rich’s mother (and Federalist Society member) Sarah V. Hart will personally be on the financial hook for paying these fines.
It has been 22 days since Dan Deevy or GaaaysInSpaaace have posted on Facebook. We were contacted today by an attendee who successfully received her chargeback from her bank because Deevy and D&I Con had not yet refunded her. Sadly, the chargebacks are going to create an additional layer of nightmare for those seeking refunds. People within the chargeback window are likely to get their money back, but others who remained patient with Deevy will be behind those people as the banks take the money from his account causing it to become overdrawn. Worse still every chargeback carries with it a fine issued against Gays In Space, erasing even more of the funds that could be going towards refunds. Our thoughts are with all of those still seeking refunds.
A D&I Con vendor, Clara M. posted some strong feelings about Dan Deevy and Gays In Space onto a recent Gays In Space Facebook post. Clara said, “I vended the first year and it was shady as fuck. I thought it was just bad advertising and poor organization and then I find out more and, Shame On You. You lied to get us to sign up. You lied about the charity work. And now here you are lying and avoiding giving people their refunds. Now you’re blocking comments on your new rant posts because people are finding out the truth. You owe EVERY vendor and artist who ever worked with you and you owe EVERY attendee their money back. And you owe those charities the money you lied about.”
Following Dan Deevy’s most recent lies and vague threats to harm himself because of his “clinical depression” (ie the consequences of his failures) we have made the decision to create a new email account so you may ask questions directly of our team. Transparency is our #1 priority. You may send tips, questions, or corrections for this website to lies@gaysinspace.org.
Dan Deevy made new “poor me” posts with fresh lies on the Gays In Space and his personal Facebook pages. This time evoking self harm as a threat to spur his supporters to attack those that want to see him held accountable, “I ask you to please research how people who’ve battle clinical depression their entire lives would respond to a situation like this”. It’s shameful and an insult to those truly suffering from clinical depression to evoke the threat of self harm, when the reality here is he is experiencing consequences from his own behavior, from the people he has harmed.
Deevy once again attacked Randy Frank, Matthew Egan and now added his former Board Chair Paul Michael Adams to his “enemies list”. Adams had resigned after misconduct by Deevy following their 2024 event and he was joined by 17 other members of the board and their advisors. Many are not surprised that D&I Con 2025 was such a disaster with all of those people no longer around.
Surprisingly, Deevy does admit here that he filed his non-profit paperwork late, which is an oversimplification of just how badly delinquent Deevy’s paperwork is. Gays In Space had their non-profit status fully revoked by the IRS in 2021 and had to operate under the fiscal sponsorship of the 501(c)3 Foundation For The Future. Gays In Space were reinstated federally but are now delinquent in California. Per California non-profit laws (where they are filed) they may not legally operate or solicit while delinquent. Dan knows this but ignores the law and operates illegally.
Charity Navigator doesn’t allow you to donate to them due to California Assembly Bill 488 preventing platforms from sending donations to delinquent organizations and the IRS website shows the last required 990 filing from Gays in Space was submitted in 2022. More than a little late Dan.
Deevy has restricted who can comment as many have been calling him out for doxxing his critics. He claims in the post that he gave multiple rounds of refunds, however no one we have spoken with has received a refund for D&I Con 2025. He turned off comments so no one can contradict him.
The authors of this website support LGBTQIA+ causes, but do not support Dan’s numerous unpaid debts. Dan Deevy ripped off the 2023 A/V Vendor for over $10,000 and has not paid for the services he used. Deevy took out a personal loan for over $15,000 in 2023 and never paid that individual back.
He used charity funds to pay for his celebrity wedding. He has been operating a non-profit organization while it was delinquent, which is against the law. He promised to award 4 to 10 scholarships to LGBT youth as a fundraising scheme for D&I Con but never gave a single scholarship. Now he promoted his 2025 event without adequate ticket sales and dozens of people are left scrambling to get refunds. He ghosted those people for over two weeks and then blamed them for not being more patient with him. He only came out of hiding because of the ABC 6 News report.
Many people had a great time at D&I Con, and we really wish the whole thing had been a success, but it wasn’t. The people who Deevy owes money to have valid claims and Deevy wants to just move on as if he hasn’t harmed so many people. He has, and he lies that he hasn’t. He calls his critics despicable and hateful, when all we want is for him to pay his debts, operate within the law, and stop lying to people. Tens of thousands in debt is no small matter.
Now he wants to know why his supporters are not waging this war for him and doing more to defend him. Deevy’s post reads, “I need everyone who believes in us and wants what we do to continue, to speak up and publicly call out these hateful people.” He is inciting his followers to take actions against his enemies – who does that remind you of?
Star Trek actress Jeri Ryan has spoken out via BlueSky following the cancelation of D&I Con 2025. “I hate hearing this!! This was going to be my first experience with this event promoter. I really hope everyone gets taken care of…”, she said. Jeri Ryan was the backup headliner for D&I Con after first George Takei canceled, and then Kate Mulgrew canceled.
On his May 8th Zoom Deevy said he did not have a timeline for giving refunds.
“I’m guessing my ticket money is gone sadly,” BlueSky user ‘Threads by Elim said. In a reply to ‘We Are Starfleet’, Elim added, “I believe you warned me months and months ago. I should have listened and not given (Deevy) a second chance.” Elim also shared that his bank only allows chargebacks within 60 days so he is at Deevy’s mercy to get a refund.
All comments on Jeri Ryan’s BlueSky post were overwhelmingly supportive of the actress. Randy Frank posted, “So sorry this happened to you Jeri! This guy is well known for doing things like this, I’m afraid.” Podcasters ‘We Are Starfleet’ added, “Thanks for sharing this!! The organizer is a known conman and grifter who has been actively hurting his own community.”
Ryan’s post included the link to the 6 ABC News segment where fans shared their frustration that Deevy had ghosted them after canceling D&I Con. Deevy had not posted for 13 days prior to canceling D&I Con and after canceling he did not post or respond to comments for 16 days. He then got really upset at anyone who jumped to conclusions about him simply disappearing for two weeks. Deevy has an uphill battle as many ticket holders have filed chargebacks to their banks following the lack of refunds, this will ultimately harm those who do not file the chargebacks, especially with the ABC report confirming what each chargeback would claim.
“I don’t have the money” is not a valid excuse to deny a refund for an event that was canceled and the banks will ultimately side with eligible ticket holders as they did not get what they paid for. Those showing loyalty to Deevy and waiting for a refund will be harmed as Deevy’s accounts go into the negative following both chargebacks and bank penalties. A nightmare scenario all around.
Today began with Dan Deevy blocking anyone from Gays In Space’s Facebook Page that might say anything about him that is remotely critical.
Dan Deevy also hosted a Zoom for attendees of the failed D&I Con 2025. Much like Dan’s convention very few people attended. Of the 6-7 participants on the meeting 4 of them were contributors to this website. During the meeting Deevy blamed Jeri Ryan for not helping him sell more tickets to the event, he admits his ticket sales were dramatically lower than usual and tells one ticket holder he will not commit to a time window to give refunds.
Deevy’s blaming Jeri Ryan for not selling tickets tracks to his habit of expecting his guests to sell all of his tickets for him. In this email exchange we see Deevy promising to pay a debt once ticket sales started flowing in for Kate Mulgrew. If each year your money is going to past mistakes, you’ll never get ahead and never be out of debt, especially with abysmally low ticket sales.
We focus exclusively on promises Dan Deevy has made and never delivered on. One, his non-profit is delinquent and he is not legally supposed to be operating (see Charity Navigator or the California AG Letter). Two, Dan Deevy stiffed the A/V vendor in 2023 for $10,000 and has not paid that debt. Three, Dan Deevy took out a short term loan from a supporter in 2023 for $15,000 and never paid it back. Four, Dan Deevy used charity resources to put on his wedding to Rich Hart in 2023 and then lied to everyone saying it was “a surprise wedding”. It wasn’t.
Planning documents place the wedding having been planned at least ten months prior, and the celebrity contracts we obtained showed the celebrities were requested to attend the wedding.
Five, Dan Deevy promised to give 4-10 scholarships for LGBT kids to go to Space Camp and instead used the money collected to launch D&I Con in 2023. Zero scholarships have ever been given and $20,000 that was pledged for this purpose was rescinded because of Deevy’s financial mismanagement.
Nothing we are concerned about says that some people did not have fun at D&I Con – and of course you’ll have fun when there is a 20:1 ratio of attendees to celebrity guests. You’ll get more one on one time with the talent, but each year someone loses because of Deevy, and loses big. These people deserve to be paid what they are owed and Deevy should not act like he hasn’t harmed them.
Today Dan Deevy began doxxing those who have spoken out against him, specifically targeting Matthew Egan and Laurel Lampton with some fresh (and false) allegations. Deevy alleges that Egan and Lampton had businesses seized because of unpaid taxes, stating “it’s funny because of the two of us HE is the only one who has had a company he founded SEIZED and SHUT DOWN due to TAX FORFEITURE.”
Deevy’s post contained screenshots of documents that included Egan and Lampton’s home address and business locations. For their privacy we are not sharing the screenshots here, though they have been fully documented for law enforcement.
Egan shared with us, “Deevy has a very active imagination. When a business status says “Forfeited Existence” there’s probably paperwork I should have filed and didn’t, but it basically was a $0 revenue LLC that we were no longer using so we allowed it to just expire. Neither Laurel or myself have ever had any assets, business or personal, seized for any reason.”
Frequent viewers of this website may remember in 2024 when Dan Deevy called Egan 140 times (see April 25th, 2024), leaving 95 text messages and 30 voicemails, so this type of unhinged behavior is not unexpected.
Laurel Lampton stated, “I have had people threaten me with violence and before today they had no way to know where we lived. Dan Deevy posting our home address from both the official Gays In Space page and his personal page is a violation of our privacy and information we never would consent to have him posting online. My first call after the posting was to local PD to file a police report.”
The two posts, one on Dan Deevy’s personal page and one from the Gays In Space page, had a pretty bad comment to like ratio. The official Gays In Space post had just 8 likes to 45 comments, and Dan Deevy’s personal post had 12 likes to 18 comments. Generally “getting ratiod” is when a post has more comments than likes confirming more people questioning the post than supporting it.
The majority of the comments were condemning Deevy for various reasons, either for doxxing, or for focusing on something other than the D&I Con refunds that everyone was waiting on. Julian B. came out swinging, “This is a REALLY, REALLY bad look dude. Your last post already had TONS of grifter wordage and this is even worse.”
Other posters called out Deevy shifting the blame for why D&I Con had been canceled, in his email on April 20th Deevy blamed the current U.S. Administration for cracking down on DEI initiatives for why D&I Con had failed, but in his post today he said, “I promise you that he and the others WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE for destroying GIS and ruining D&I CON for everyone.” Which is it? Was it the crackdown on DEI or all of Dan’s haters? (SPOILER: It failed because he didn’t sell enough tickets.)
Sandra C. had the same question, “Like so what’s the real reason? Is it because of the DEI crackdown as you said in your email to ticket holders or is it because you have used, abused and taken advantage of people to the point you think they are coming for you?”
While some supporters of Dan Deevy, like Linda Acevedo, said that they did not believe any accusations against Deevy because he had never harmed them, others were more critical. Doula D. shared the letter from the California Attorney General’s office proving that Gays In Space was currently delinquent, she added, “they’re not in good standing”.
Jason T. said, “Maybe you could focus on refunding those of us who would have been at D&I con this year and deal with this shit another time.” Which echoed a comment from Debbie D. who added, “We are a group of people who just want their money back for a canceled event. This is getting ridiculous and is super unprofessional.”
Esther R. added, “this is a pure ad hominem attack that makes you look petty and reactionary.” We are sure when Dan Deevy wrote this post he saw it going very differently but public sentiment has shifted heavily following the scathing report by ABC 6 in Philadelphia.
A quick visit to Charity Navigator will also confirm what the Attorney General’s website states that Gays In Space is delinquent and it fully warns potential donors, “This organization appears on the most recent listing of nonprofits that are delinquent with California state registrations.”
Charity Navigator further states, “In compliance with California Assembly Bill 488, we have disabled donations to this charity on our platform at this time.” That is because it is unlawful for a delinquent non-profit to operate or solicit while their status is incomplete.
Dan Deevy has come out of hiding and he is pissed! After several rageful comments (shared below) Deevy made the following post to both his Dan Deevy Facebook page and to the Gays In Space Facebook:
“I am absolutely applaud by what is being said about me. I am truly in shock. REFUNDS WILL BE SENT!!! It’s only been a day and a half since the convention would have ended and already I’m being crucified beyond belief. This has been an absolutely soul crushing experience for me AND it’s the ONLY event I have EVER Cancelled! In over 8 years and 300+ events, this has NEVER happened before. So it’s going to take me a minute to fix everything.” (Hit the actual posts for the full text)
The fact is Deevy cancelled DNI Con 16 days ago, and he hadn’t posted to his Facebook pages for 12 days prior to that. When journalists reached out multiple times he ignored them. He had ample opportunity to defend himself but he has been in hiding having his pity party. The ticketing engine Afton said they haven’t been able to reach Deevy either.
Dan Deevy also hit several Facebook groups and people’s personal Facebook pages to attack those who are doubting him. On one comment he said: “You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! It has been 2 days since the convention was due to end. Do you know how long most convention or shows take to send out refunds?”
In the Star Trek Family Facebook group Deevy said: “EVERY ticket holder received the refund information in the email that I sent them. having to cancel the convention was the hardest thing i’ve ever had to do. I have worked 70-80 hour work weeks with no days off for years. The haters and their lies finally won. They finally beat me. 1 person being attacked and maligned incessantly for years by dozens of hateful, jealous people finally took its toll. So yes, I went silent. I’m a human being with actual feelings of my own that matter. And those people have destroyed me. THEY are the reason the convention was cancelled. It was THEIR actions that caused it. I will make everything right for attendees as I ALWAYS DO. But even after that, I’ll still be the bad guy. i’ve had it.”
This is a departure from Deevy’s statement on April 20th where he blamed the convention’s failure on the government’s crackdown on DEI programs, even though Deevy never received government funding. Now he blames all of us haters who are trying to see him held accountable for the tens of thousands of dollars he has stiffed people for via this convention.
This is par for the course with Deevy, he says one thing and when people don’t believe that he tries on a new lie to try to evade the blame for his actions. He is offering a Zoom this Friday at 9PM EST where he is promising to give people answers directly – I wonder if he’ll let us join?
It has been 15 days since Dan Deevy canceled DNI Con for 2025. 15 days since he emailed attendees telling them they have until May 31st to request a refund. Today an article was published out of Philadelphia about those who have so far been unable to get their refund, and no one has been able to reach Dan Deevy. The article states: “organizers did not update the ticket page for days and the Gaaays in Space website still advertises the event as an “EPIC.. once in a lifetime opportunity!!!”
“We just want our money back,” said Nicole Forst.
Deevy positioned his failure as due to “the government’s recent actions against DEI initiatives” though DNI Con never received funding from the government. The event failed because not enough people were interested and not due to some DEI conspiracy. Past years have had around 200-300 attendees and that simply is not enough volume to support an event with five figure guarantees owed to the celebrity guests. One attendee created this video asking “anyone else fighting for their money back?” as she discussed her unrefunded tickets to meet Star Trek actor Wilson Cruz, but she has had no luck reaching Dan Deevy to receive the refund.
Generally when this type of thing happens, as it has with Deevy in the past, he will disappear for a while and then come back with an updated sob story. Even Afton Tickets that handled the ticketing for this event is reporting that they cannot reach Deevy to get any information to the people emailing them about the event. We did fully notify Afton Tickets in advance that this was likely to happen, but they elected to work with Deevy anyway.
Gays In Space still remains Delinquent in California and was not legally supposed to be operating at all until that delinquency was resolved, and they had no business status to be operating in PA while delinquent. Gays In Space had their non-profit status completely revoked previously and they had to operate under a third party to continue operations while they begged to be reinstated.
If you visit the Gays In Space or Dan Deevy Facebook pages you’ll see people comforting Dan Deevy and husband Rich Hart about how awful it is that the event didn’t happen. It’s clear a lot of people are believing Deevy’s lie that a crackdown on DEI initiatives is responsible for the failure of this event – and not the simple truth that they failed to drum up local interest so the event could afford its many celebrity guests.
Fortunately a lot of people are asking the right questions and commenting on the lack of refunds, but when Deevy comes out of hiding he’ll simply ban those people and continue his grift with whoever is left. Deevy’s goal is not money, he never wanted to be in a situation where he couldn’t give refunds. Dan Deevy’s goal is to put himself on a stage and to hang out with celebrities using charity funds. At his core Dan Deevy yearns for attention and to be important.
DNI Con 2025 has been cancelled. As of my writing this neither Gaaays In Spaaace nor Dan Deevy himself have posted to their Facebook or Instagram page. Their last post was April 8th, it is now April 20th, so 12 days with no messages less than two weeks to the event. The only public statement we are currently aware of is by the band “The Roddenberries” cancelling their concert because DNI Con 2025 isn’t happening. Their post uses the postponement language of “pushed back”.
DNI Con 2024 had less than 300 attendees, and once again lost money. The 2024 charity event was not paying for Dan’s wedding (with charity funds) as he did in 2023 so the event lost less than the 2023 event but 2024 concluded with 29 board members resigning due to Deevy’s unethical behavior. Going into 2025 those people were not present to financially bail Deevy out and the hotel has already started refunding people who had booked their reservations in downtown Philly. We hope their flights and other travel were fully refundable or a lot of people are going to be out a lot of money!
UPDATE – Thanks to a post at Stay2uned.com we now have a copy of the email sent out by Dan Deevy and Gaaays In Spaaace. They did fully cancel the convention, not just reschedule it or postpone it, and they do offer refunds. What has upset many people is the ask that attendees leave their purchase “as a donation” to their cause. We do not recommend ever trusting Dan Deevy with your money.
Concerned citizens used the Afton Tickets engine to add Away Missin tickets to their cart and came up with these approximate ticket sales prior to the cancellation.
Roughly 20 tickets for Away Missions had sold in total, out of 185 that were stated with each celebrity guest’s announcement. Some of these “sold” we believe are carried over from Kate Mulgrew’s cancellation in March. Both George Takei and Kate Mulgrew canceled on DNI Con this year.
As of my writing this Deevy is STILL SELLING TICKETS even though the event is cancelled. Afton Tickets was informed of Deevy’s past issues but they allowed him to sell tickets on their platform anyway. Deevy chose Afton Tickets because other ticket platforms have much stricter refund policies.
UPDATE – As of 4PM on Monday April 21st Afton Tickets confirmed to us that they terminated the ticket sales for DNI Con 2025 because the event had been formally canceled.
In the past few weeks Deevy has been emailing the talent and their agents to beg for promotional videos to help drum up ticket sales. He also asked specifically that they share these promotional videos from their personal social media as Deevy has limited reach. Some of the talent agreed to make these posts, and others did not as a promotional video was not in their contract.
Gaaays In Spaaace just doesn’t have local Philedelphia reach, they have just 4,000 followers on Facebook but their reach is nationwide and at the end of the day DNI Con needs people in seats in Philadelphia, not in Los Angeles, not in New York. Philadelphia as a venue was originally selected so that Rich Hart’s family would be local to attend his wedding to Deevy, and they just stuck with Philly since then despite having no local marketing muscle.
Keep in mind they are supposed to be a charity, so all of the money they lose here on booking celebrity guest flights, train tickets, non-refundable deposits, etc, are funds lost from a non-profit. Funds that helped no one. They are using charity funds just to put Dan Deevy on a stage so he can take photos with famous people and look important. The people who fell for this “con” are out money as well. It’s why the Board for Gaaays In Spaaace is now just Deevy’s husband and mother in law. Everyone else left once they saw how he was using the charity funds for personal gain.
Deevy even removed the Board of Directors page from their website because everyone on the board is now related by birth or by marriage. If you’re not familiar with public non-profit regulations that is incredibly unethical for a public non-profit.
The 29 board members who resigned had paid a lot of the last minute expenses during the 2024 DNI Con and this year Inara Tabir returned to Gaaays In Spaaace after having a very public falling out with Deevy and she brought with her Grant Harkness who provided the funding to make deposits for the celebrity guests. Paul Michael Adams as one example paid about $1,500 out of his personal funds to reimburse Kate Mulgrew’s final travel expenses in 2024 when Deevy refused to do so. We do not have confirmation of this but we are told that Grant Harkness provided those funds as a loan. Will that mean he joins the others that Deevy owes tens of thousands of dollars to?
Additionally, labeling this the Diversity & Inclusion Con has had several people refer to it as “Gay Con” and “Why would I go to gay con I’m not gay?” Gaaays In Spaaace have chosen this very specific niche for their event but in doing so they have completely tanked any mass market appeal that the event may have as large groups of people see the marketing and think this event is just not for them because they are not gay. Of course everyone was welcome to attend, but their marketing created confusion and turned off the mass numbers they would have needed to afford to host the event in such an expensive city and the expensive guarantees of their fifteen guests.
One theory about the cancellation is that Gaaays In Spaaace is once again delinquent in California (which they are), where their non-profit is founded. Their foreign registration in Philadelphia is reliant on good standing in their California home state, which they don’t have. Some believe the hotel was forced to cancel the event because of this delinquency, but without confirmation of that our best assumption is they just didn’t have the money.
PLEASE NOTE – The above information is accurate to the best of our understanding but there’s a good chance we have gotten details wrong. The telephone game gonna telephone and all that. We will update the information with more accurate details as we have them.
Very little contact has been had with Dan Deevy since the 2024 D&I Con, though they have started selling tickets for a 2025 event despite not having a venue locked down yet. On the night of Tuesday, June 25th at 11:51PM Matthew Egan began receiving calls from Dan Deevy. Dan would call and then immediately hang up, call and hang up. Dan called Matthew 140 times, sent 95 text messages and left 30 voicemails. At 2AM Deevy created a post on GaaaysInSpaaace’s Facebook and on his personal Facebook that tried to label Matthew as homophobic. [VIEW THAT POST HERE]
We have been told by multiple parties from Dan’s own family to those who have worked with him before that this type of behavior generally involves a large amount of alcohol and/or Adderall. Dan disapeared for two days and many comments were posted on Dan’s Facebook posts challenging his negative comments and asking him why he had called Matthew 140 times. Dan denied calling 140 times and a member of his family suggested that when Dan has these blackout drunk episodes that he truly will not remember anything he did and will deny doing it even when confronted with evidence. Though in this case the call log (above) and the 95 text messages (below) were all fully documented in writing so his denials are as funny as they are sad.

In the past week Deevy has made multiple harassing phone calls or sent offensive and harassing online messages to three people total (that we know of) who are affiliated with this website. Deevy argued with people in the comments for a bit but when it was clear that people weren’t buying what he was trying to sell he deleted the post and made a new one with the comments locked – gotta control that narrative!
Yesterday, on June 1st Dan Deevy and Gays In Space began making post about the “cyber bullying” that Dan has been “receiving” from the people concerned about his ongoing misuse of charity funds. You can view the complete Gays In Space statement HERE. One key component here that validates a lot of what we’ve been saying is that Gays In Space collected $45,000 promising to give scholarships to LGBT people to go to Space Camp. That program has now been formally cancelled with ZERO scholarships having been given and the $20,000 that Jane Jorgensen had pledged to the scholarships now having been formally withdrawn because Dan Deevy never gave any scholarships.
Gays In Space stated: “In retrospect, we recognize that we proceeded too quickly and did not have a sufficient operational structure in place to make this a sustainable program. As a result, we have decided to suspend the program for the time being. We hope to relaunch it in the future when we have resolved these issues.”. What he does not say is that he used the $25,000 from the National Space Society for D&I Con expenses and not to give any scholarships like the application promises.
So to be clear for the historical record, Gays In Space promised to give scholarships IN THIS GRANT APPLICATION but are now saying the money all along was to be used to put on their convention. We knew this would be Dan’s ultimate response and that is why he made the actual monetary portion of that application all about event expenses. I want you to think for yourself though and read that grant application where he promises to give scholarships, complete with the fact that he never gave a single scholarship, and make a judgement for yourself whether the budgetary breakdown overrides that all written commitments in that application are not to put on a Comic Con but instead to send LGBT kids to Space Camp. Dan Deevy sent ZERO kids to Space Camp.
Quoting the Gays In Space grant application to the National Space Society: “The immediate beneficiaries of this program will be the LGBTQIA+ student recipients who will be given the opportunity to grow and explore their potential in a way that they may have never considered possible.” That sounds like their budget would need to go to Scholarships yea? Not things like Audio Visual services for Dan’s failed Comic Con that is tens of thousands in debt.
They have now dismantled the scholarship program completely, having spent the money from the National Space Society on their event and delivering zero promises that were made in the grant application. Dan instead says we’re all just bullying him and lying – but I think the facts still speak for themselves as that grant application was Dan’s own words.
It has been five days since D&I Con 2024 and four days since Gays In Space Chairman of the Board Paul Michael Adams has resigned due to Dan Deevy’s constant fraud and providing an incomplete financial picture of Gays In Space finances. The “Our Team” page has been removed from the Gays In Space website, but we took screenshots of that page prior to it being removed – we are told every member of the board of directors and most members of the advisory board are resigning from Gays In Space because of Dan’s behavior. [CLICK HERE] for a PDF with the Board of Directors and Advisory Board as it was listed during D&I Con 2024.

D&I Con 2024 has ended and things did not go well. Gays In Space ran out of money before the event concluded and many celebrity expenses had to be paid out of personal funds by members of the staff, Board Chair Paul Michael Adams spent around $15,000 of his own money to pay outstanding contractual obligations that Dan Deevy refused to pay and Monday following the convention Paul resigned from Gays In Space. Celebrity Guests of the convention have told us they still have not received funds that Dan Deevy had promised them.
Former Legal advisor and current Board of Directors member Joshua Brown made some comments on Facebook directed at a staff member that the board had fired the week before the convention because he asked questions about the many instances of fraudulent behavior by Dan Deevy.
Joshua Brown Stated: “yeah, I understand where you’re coming from now. But I wish that the Board had had the bandwidth to explain to you further why the Board’s deliberative process takes a long time. We try to only speak on serious matters with one voice, and truly, all our focus was on trying to work out the million details that had to be addressed right then to make the second convention a possibility. I wish we had had the leisure to study and provide a postmortem to every interested person on all matters of concern from past GIS operations, but as a totally volunteer board, we had to prioritize. And making the event that was happening in 90-120 days actually happen for the people who had already purchased tickets vs. addressing allegations from a year or several years prior – the priorities were necessarily set on the former.
Because if we had not ensured the con would happen, that would ve just been a whole group of newly aggrieved people. That’s been portrayed as us not caring – not by you, but by others – and I honestly just wish some of those critics had a better appreciation for how deeply the Members of the Board care. But our time is limited, and for most 2024, all we did was focus on this con.
The other matters we were being asked to address – almost all of which preceded the tenures of 2/3 of the current Board – were simply just beyond our capacity. That’s an unsatisfying answer, I know, but it’s also an honest one.
I realize this is far afield of why you commented. But I also realize there is a contingent of people who felt that they brought concerns to GIS, and GIS didn’t take them seriously or didn’t address them thoroughly. And I would understand if you were one of those people. But I wanted to assure you that that wasn’t the case. It was truly more than we had the capacity to handle while planning to con.”
It is a frustrating answer from their former legal advisor who has been very supportive of Dan Deevy in the past to use the excuse of “we didn’t have enough time to look into the allegations of fraud” because we’re talking about serious crimes and people being out tens of thousands of dollars because of Dan Deevy’s behavior. Regardless of whether the Gays In Space board feels they have time to do it, it is their fiduciary duty as board members of a charity that claims to benefit the public good to look into such allegations.
Many board members have resigned, both directors and advisors, but these accusations were out there and they chose not to act. So is Dan the only party ultimately to blame here or do those board members who looked the other way also carry some responsibility for enabling Dan Deevy’s fraud?
As D&I Con 2024 kicks off in Philadelphia, still without being a registered foreign entity to legally operate in Pennsylvania, our good friend and YouTube Partner Henry Resilient did a deep dive with Matthew Egan on all the gritty details of Dan Deevy and Gays In Space finances.
In 2023 Gays In Space received a $25,000 grant from the National Space Society. In their grant application they promise: “The ISA Scholarship program will send LGBTQIA+ students (ages 15-18) interested in pursuing a career in STEM and/or the Space Industry, to Space Academy. Each recipient will receive an all-expense paid trip to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama for a weeklong Advanced Space Academy training experience.”
The application goes on to state that they have already collected $20,000 which will allow them to give four scholarships before receiving the additional $25,000 which will allow them to give ten scholarships and, quoting: “the additional funding necessary to send enough of our kids to qualify for a separate session consisting of only our winners” in 2023.
They state that LGBT kids are likely to be bullied so they are sending a full cohort to a special private Space Academy session only for scholarship winners. They claim in writing that they would announce those winners at D&I Con 2023. They gave zero scholarships in 2023 because D&I Con overall lost a huge sum of money.
The grant application goes on to promise a ton of press coverage about the launch of the scholarship program, quoting: “Since announcing our intent to create this scholarship we have received an astounding amount of support from our ever-growing list of distinguished judges, media outlets anxiously awaiting the go ahead to publish articles and interviews.” There was no such press and a quick Google search for “Gays In Space Scholarships” only brings up their own internal page.
Responding to the accusations and prior to our release of the actual grant application, Dan Deevy stated: “claims have been made that no one has yet been awarded our ISA Scholarship. These are also patently untrue. Our first recipient has been chosen.” So they have CHOSEN one person to receive the scholarship in 2024, one single young person, but they broke every promise they made in 2023 that they would have already given between 4 and 10 scholarships at D&I Con 2023.
Dan says he cannot reveal the name of the recipient to protect their privacy, but they collected $45,000 and are only giving a single scholarship after making very lofty promises.
Content On Call, a 501(c)3 non-profit that makes content for charities, was scheduled to provide photo ops at D&I Con in 2024. To do this the convention agreed to purchase two photo printers. When the Content On Call team learned that the AV vendor had not been paid over $10,000 and a fan of the event had loaned $15,000 that was also not paid back, there was great concern that Dan would not have the money to buy the printers. Communication was established with Dan Deevy to ask how the organization was going to pay for the photo printers if Gays In Space is in so much debt.
Dan Deevy became very upset and started screaming over being questioned and said he emptied out his new husband Rich Hart’s 401K to make the event happen and the Content On Call team was wrong to not have faith that he had a plan to secure the funding and get the parties paid. Seeing a pattern of behavior that was deeply concerning the board of Content On Call voted unanimously to withdraw from D&I Con 2024. The previous photo op vendor Epic Photo Ops was contracted for D&I Con 2024.
As Dan Deevy grappled with the debts he incurred during the first D&I Con in 2023 – tens of thousands of dollars – Dan keeps promising to pay the vendors on Tuesday for a Hamburger today. May 30th, May 31st, June 15th, and on into July of 2023 Dan had not paid his AV vendor or the fan that loaned him $15,000. In this email exchange we can see he also owed the Marriott though we don’t see the total dollar amount for that debt.
In the June 15th email Dan Deevy says he has a small sponsorship coming in to Gays In Space and he will be sending the entirety of those sponsorship funds directly to the AV vendor that hadn’t been paid. Can you imagine giving money to Gays In Space expecting those funds to help LGBT people in some way, and the funds get used to pay debts to the AV vendor that put up all the lighting and video gear for Dan’s celebrity wedding?
Then on November 8th Dan Deevy reaches out again still having not paid in full and adds that Kate Mulgrew from Star Trek Voyager has been added and surely with her fame that he will raise more money to pay down his debts! As with previous promises this one went unfilled and the AV vendor is still owed $10,000.
Gays In Space hosts their first Galactic Diversity & Inclusion Convention in Philadelphia, PA. Saturday night of the event Dan Deevy announces a “surprise” wedding on their special main stage which was a 5-10 minute walk from the main D&I Con exhibitor area. This special main stage had elaborate scaffolding and lighting because Dan wanted it for his wedding.
To evade concerns that Dan was using charity funds to pay for his wedding he stated that it was a last minute addition. The AV company disputed this stating that they had been working on wedding features for months prior to the event and wedding officiator Denise Crosby had a special costume brought in just for the wedding.
Celebrity Guests to D&I Con also had it in their contract stating: “Talent is requested (but not required) to attend the ‘Special Wedding Event: The Marriage of GIS Founder, Dan Deevy & Richard Hart’ on Sat evening in the Main Hall.”
This extra side room served no real purpose for D&I Con and was a far walk from the main event. They used the room for a couple side events, but those easily could have happened in the main convention space. The lights and scaffolding Dan requested was excessive to the point where it would make a megachurch blush. But Dan got his celebrity wedding paid for with charity funds.
There have been many concerns over the years about how Gays In Space spends money. In this document from the California Attorney General’s office we see that Gays In Space brought in $23,076 revenue for the year but they spent $36,641, for a total loss of $13,565.
Where did this money go? On the same page it lists that $10,800 was paid out to Dan Deevy for “rent” on his apartment. Now unlike other items above, this is probably completely legal, but the question is – is this ethical? While Gays In Space lost $13,565 is it ethical for the co-founder and President to pay himself $10,800 from charity funds?
We would argue no, this is not ethical and raises a lot of questions. Expenses for Gays In Space are often things like flights for Dan Deevy to go to Comic Con so he can setup a booth – which sounds great. Until you learn that they spend $2,000 to go to a convention and stay in a nice hotel and only sell a few hundred dollars in merch, if even that. So the charity is basically paying for Dan Deevy to travel around and meet celebrities and invite them to his parties.
Dan loves celebrity contacts because when you have celebrities at your event it instantly makes you look credible – and for someone known for spending so much more than he raises and for questionable at best and illegal at worst charity practices – faking that credibility with celebrity relationships is vitally important to keep up the grift.
Dan Deevy would have you believe that we are bigots who hate gay people, but the truth is the exact opposite. Everyone who contributed to this website was a past staff member, board member, celebrity guest, or volunteer of Gays In Space. We know about these unethical behaviors because we were supporting Dan Deevy in helping LGBT youth. We attempted to contact the Gays In Space Board of Directors and were told we were lying, we were just trying to tear Dan down, and the board refused to have a conversation with us.
The board was hand picked by Dan Deevy because they’ll support him. We hate neither Dan Deevy nor Gays In Space but we don’t like how they say one thing and then do another, all paid for by charity funds. Ultimately, we would just like to see Dan Deevy admit to these behaviors and resign pending the criminal investigation that was launched when 29 members of his Board of Directors and Advisory Board resigned due to his behavior.
